Rugged cliffs, a churning sea. A lone wanderer traverses through the harsh landscape, up one cliff, down  another. She is on a never-ending journey, seemingly as determined as the waves crashing around her. With  her she carries a sack that contains the key to understanding her mission. 

Filmed on the Norwegian peninsula, Trillion is a hypnotic journey disconnected from time and place. The  understated camerawork uses careful compositions that challenge traditional documentary storytelling. The  circular shapes of the cliffs and the vast open sea echo the microscopic outlines of fish scales spreading  across the rock. Trillion also examines scales on another level: from the perspective of human activity and  nature. The endless toil of the protagonist, who draws on the myth of Sisyphus, might appear overshadowed  by her surroundings, but the impact of her actions might still make a difference. 

Director Victor Kossakovsky has directed several critically acclaimed documentary films. Trillion is  the second installment in Kossakovsky’s so-called empathy trilogy, the first part of which, GUNDA (2020),  premiered at the Berlinale Film Festival. Like Trillion, Gunda also explores the complex relationships  between humans and nature with Joaquin Phoenix as executive producer.
