Promised Land (1975) is Andrzej Wajda’s epic portrait of industrialising Poland, where ambition, money, and power collide. Set in the rapidly expanding textile city of Łódź at the turn of the century, the film follows three young friends, a Pole, a Jew, and a German, who pool their money to build a factory and pursue their fortunes. As they navigate ruthless competition, exploitative working conditions, and the shifting social order of the industrial age, their friendship and ideals are tested by their pursuit of wealth. One of Poland’s most significant and internationally renowned directors, Wajda brings this turbulent period to life with a sweeping and uncompromising vision.
