Mulholland DriveDavid Lynch’s masterpiece — is often hailed as one of the greatest films of the modern era. In a 2016 BBC Culture poll of 177 leading critics, it was named the best film of the 21st century, and The New York Times later ranked it second on its own list.

David Lynch is a renowned filmmaker and artist whose distinctive style has become so recognizable that the term Lynchian has entered our lexicon and was even added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2018. Mulholland Drive is considered by many to be the crowning jewel of his filmography; a visually arresting masterpiece that showcases Lynch’s remarkable tonal control. The film shifts seamlessly from truly terrifying horror to noir-inflected mystery, from dark comedy to heartbreaking drama, moving between the surreal and the achingly real with masterful precision.

What is dream, and what is reality? David Lynch’s mysterious and nightmarish masterpiece about two women navigating the city of dreams, Los Angeles, earned him the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival. The film follows Betty (Naomi Watts), a young actress who has just moved to Los Angeles. In her aunt’s apartment, she discovers a woman who has lost her memory. Calling herself Rita (Laura Harring), the woman has survived an accident and taken refuge in a stranger’s home. Together, Betty and Rita try to uncover Rita’s true identity, while Betty also pursues her dream of making it as an actress in Los Angeles.
