Jossain on valo joka ei sammu (A Light That Never Goes Out), which had its world premiere in the ACID section of the Cannes Film Festival, is a powerful debut feature written and directed by Lauri-Matti Parppei—an alumnus of the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture / ELO Film School Helsinki.
The film received a total of seven Jussi Awards—the Finnish equivalent of the Oscars—including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Music, Best Actor, Breakthrough of the Year, and Best Sound Design.
Pauli (Samuel Kujala), a classical flutist, returns to his small Finnish hometown to recover after a breakdown. Unable to play, he feels like a failure. Pauli runs into Iiris (Anna Rosaliina Kauno), who makes experimental music by herself. Iiris starts persuading him to try and make some music together, and she’s convinced that by joining forces, they’d be able to create something completely new and unique. Pauli, who has always sought perfection, is drawn to her chaotic energy and finds comfort in their sonic experiments.
