“What does the world and society look like through the eyes of an Elokapina activist? Saku Soukka’s documentary film takes us to the heart of the movement.”

In his debut feature-length film Rebellion for Future, that premiered at this years Helsinki International Film Festival visual artist Saku Soukka offers an inside view of the Elokapina (Extinction Rebellion Finland) community. What price must one pay for criticizing the dominant practices of society? How does it feel to face powerful authorities and their harsh measures?

Filmed over two years, the documentary closely follows events unfolding both in the aapa mires of Lapland and on the streets of Helsinki. In their effort to curb the climate crisis and biodiversity loss, the rebels use their own bodies to block factories, production sites, and streets. Clashes with the police are tense, and activists at times end up in holding cells, in court, and even subjected to violence.
